Here's the founding problem with a night out in the Klang Valley: the good part usually starts after the city has decided to close. The 4am kick-off, the set that runs late, the conversation that finally gets interesting at one in the morning — the venue that was perfect for a 9pm dinner is shuttered and dark by the time any of it happens.

So we stopped ranking places by food, or view, or how good the beer list is, and started ranking them by closing time. That reordering produces a very different list. It puts a 24-hour hawker court in Bandar Sunway above several rooftop bars, which felt wrong right up until about one in the morning.

The best bar in KL is whichever one is still open.

Rock Cafe

Open 24 hours Jalan PJS 11/20, Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya

The unglamorous winner. An open-air hawker court with a big screen, a snooker hall attached, and no closing time at all — the only place on this list where "will they still be serving?" never comes up. Student-heavy, breezy, cheap, and packed even on weekdays. You're eating char kuey teow, satay and nasi lemak rather than truffle fries, and after midnight that is straightforwardly the better trade. Regulars will tell you the seafood stall that used to be at Asia Cafe lives here now.

NZ Curry House

Open 24 hours Lot 42, Jalan Ampang, KLCC

The 24-hour mamak with the Twin Towers directly in front of it. Recently reworked into an open-air layout with classic mamak seating, and the tables facing the towers are genuinely contested — expect to queue. Worth knowing before you plan around it: the tower lights go off around midnight, so the famous view has a much shorter shelf life than the kitchen does. Tandoori and naan are the order, the coconuts are enormous, and service slows to a crawl when it fills up, which it does.

Havana Bar & Grill

Until 3am 2 & 4 Changkat Bukit Bintang

The Changkat anchor, and the one with the most seating options anywhere on the strip — portico, verandah, bar, upstairs — which matters enormously when you arrive as a group of nine at 1am with no booking. Opens 1pm Sundays, 2pm weekends, 4pm weekdays, closes at 3am every night. Big, busy, consistently good, and it absorbs a crowd better than the smaller Changkat rooms manage.

Healy Mac's • P. Ramlee

2am — 3am Fri & Sat Crown Regency Service Suites, 12 Jalan P. Ramlee

The P. Ramlee branch rather than the Changkat one, and the distinction matters: this is the bigger, calmer room, opening at 10am on weekends if you're catching something early. Screens throughout, showing sport from several continents simultaneously. The Guinness is why people are here. Note the weeknight close is 2am — it only stretches to 3am on Friday and Saturday, which rules it out for the very latest starts.

Hallaway KL Rooftop Bar

Until 3am Level 13, Wisma Trax, Jalan Lima, Chan Sow Lin

The one for the earlier night. Thirteen floors up in Chan Sow Lin — an area nobody associates with rooftop bars, which is precisely why there's no cover charge and the food is priced closer to a cafe than a rooftop. Open-air, live band Thursday through Sunday, full skyline view, jellyfish lighting that everybody photographs. It fills up fast on Fridays, so book. Come for the eleven o'clock thing, not the four o'clock one.

Elsewhere worth knowing

  • Gridiron, Bangsar. The most genuinely sport-first room in the city. Reserve for anything big.
  • The Dark Horse, Jalan Sultan Ismail. Open till 2am, pool and darts free to play, most reliable food of any bar here.
  • TREC, Jalan Tun Razak. Open until 5am, which is the only statistic that matters for a very late night. Multiple venues in one compound, so the group can split without leaving.
  • Mamak Cafe Danau Kota, Setapak. Open 24 hours. A neighbour has left a public review politely begging them to turn the TV down at 3:30am, which tells you everything about the atmosphere.

How to actually plan the night

Work backwards from the closing time, not forwards from dinner. A 3am close means the kitchen and bar stop well before the room empties, so a 3:30am plan at a 3am venue is a plan you'll be executing on the pavement outside.

For anything running past two, the realistic list is short: Rock Cafe, NZ Curry House, TREC, and whichever mamak is nearest your house. For anything wrapping by midnight, the whole city is open to you.

Two practical notes. Book anywhere with a view — Hallaway and the tower-facing tables at NZ both go early. And sort the ride home before you go out, because at 4:45am on a weeknight the Grab situation in Chan Sow Lin is a completely different proposition from the one in Bukit Bintang.
