Inside LMFA: KL's newest music festival, and why we backed it
Mandopop, hip-hop and electronic on one bill, for one night, at The Arch Galleries. First editions are always a bet on something.
Loud Music Festival Asia — 狂浪音乐祭, LMFA if you were following the hashtag — held its first edition on Saturday 18 July at The Arch Galleries, six until midnight. Organised by Festival Collective, with GOXUAN, XUAN and MY FM as media partners and NICKTHEREAL among the names on the bill, it was pitched as a single night bringing Mandopop, hip-hop, electronic and contemporary pop into the same room.
Read that lineup description again, because it is the whole argument. Mandopop and hip-hop and electronic, on one night, sold as one audience. That is not how KL's live music market has historically been carved up, and it's the reason NMB88 wanted in.
The bet
For most of the last decade the Chinese-language music audience in Malaysia has been served mainly by arena shows — one artist, one night, Axiata or Bukit Jalil, a tour date on a route that also stops in Taipei and Singapore. The festival format, meanwhile, has largely belonged to English-language and electronic acts.
Two audiences, two circuits, two sets of promoters. LMFA proposed something different: put these audiences in the same room and let the music do the work.
Why NMB88 backed it
The appeal was not simply the size of the lineup. It was the idea of creating a shared experience around different audiences and different styles of music.
Bringing Mandopop, hip-hop and electronic music together created a festival environment where different communities could experience the same event in one place.
The festival experience
From the first performances through the final sets of the night, the event focused on creating an energetic environment for the audience. The combination of artists and genres gave the festival its own identity.
For NMB88, being part of the event was an opportunity to support a format that brings different audiences together while creating something new for the local entertainment scene.
What's next
First editions are always a bet on something. LMFA's first edition showed what can happen when different sounds, audiences and ideas are brought together under one roof.
NMB88 is looking forward to seeing where the festival goes next.
